My sister Sam turns 17 years old tomorrow. For the last few weeks she has been sending me links to things she wants for her birthday. At first it was cute--she wanted new track pants track jackets with Apollo High School's logo on it. But, then she got a little demanding.

I was at my mom's house for Easter when Sam approached me and asked me if I had thought about buying her anything off of the website for her birthday. I told her I didn't buy anything yet but would look at it later.

Then, she went ahead and filled out all of her information, size, color, address, etc. She was ready to "check out" in the online store. She came up to me and said, "don't worry about finding this later at home--I already filled it out for you. I just need your credit card."

I rolled my eyes at her but gave her my credit card anyway--Because, when it comes down to it, I was probably going to buy it for her anyway. But, I couldn't help but feel like it was kind of an insincere gift. I like to give gifts with thought and meaning behind them. This was so not personalized.

So, since her birthday is on April Fools Day, I've been contemplating pulling a fast one on her. I want to tell her that I returned the track jacket and instead made her something myself. Do you think this would be too harsh? When I was a kid, you didn't know what you were getting for your birthday until your birthday. If you got something you didn't like, you pretended like you loved it. You were just grateful to get something.
