Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley Deliver ‘Over You,’ ‘Home’ at the 2013 Grammy Awards
Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley are no strangers to collaboration. The pair of iconoclastic country performers, who are currently on tour together, also performed together at the 2013 Grammy Awards, singing Lambert’s ‘Over You’ and Bentley’s ‘Home’ with decidedly mixed results.
Though it might not always be apparent to viewers at home, awards shows can be very dodgy for the artists who perform live. That’s because they are used to playing in a controlled environment in which they work every night with the same sound and lighting people. By contrast, awards shows throw performers into an unfamiliar environment, and at the mercy of a house lighting director and sound engineer.
That was apparent in Sunday night’s (Feb. 10) Grammys performance, particularly for Lambert, who appeared uncomfortable enough without a guitar in her hands. But as she launched into ‘Over You,’ the band was far too loud in contrast to her voice. She seemed thrown off not only vocally — turning in a singing performance less than what she is capable of — but visibly as well, at one point looking around with an air of, ‘What do I do now?’
Bentley’s appearance shifted the mood somewhat. He also seemed to struggle with problems in the monitor mix during ‘Over You,’ but when the song morphed into ‘Home,’ both he and Lambert sang a bit stronger — which may have been owing to the fact that the song contained fewer instruments to drown them out in the mix.
Overall, the 2013 Grammys performance was below par for both, but still managed to convey the proper emotions. Lambert and Bentley are such consummate pros that they rose above the technical difficulties they were experiencing to pull out a performance that ultimately did their songs proud.
