With immigration such a big issue, the New York Times published a state by state breakdown of where the population of each state has come from. It was interesting to see where the Minnesotans of today are from. Here's how our current make-up shakes down.

Where people living in Minnesota today were born:

  • 68% of us were born right here in Minnesota.
  • 4% of escaped from Wisconsin.
  • 2% of us fled from Iowa.
  • 2% of us were born in North Dakota
  • 2% were born in Illinois.
  • 5% of us were born in other Midwestern states.
  • 3% of today's Minnesotans moved here from the Western U.S.
  • 3% of us have come up from the South.
  • 2% of us moved here from Northeastern states.
  • 8% of today's Minnesotans were born outside of the U.S.

The state with the largest percentage of homebodies is Louisiana, with 79% of it's population being native to the state. The state with the largest percentage of transplants is  Nevada, with only 25% of it's population being born there.

California had the largest percentage of a state's population born outside the U.S. at 28%, Mississippi and West Virginia's populations each have the smallest percentage of population born outside the U.S. at 2%.
