BECKER -- Sherburne County authorities and the family of a Becker father and daughter killed in a crash last summer spoke about the dangers of distracted driving this (Friday) morning.

Last July, a distracted driver drove through a red light on Highway 10 outside of Becker causing a crash that resulted in the deaths of 54-year-old Charles Maurer and his 10-year-old daughter, Cassy.

Rhonda Maurer spoke on behalf of her family at the news conference at Becker City Park.

"The loss of Chuck and Cassy has brought my family many different emotions," Maurer says. "Pain from the loss of two amazing souls, anger for how they were taken from us, frustration from the preventability of the crash, and confusion from why we still see people doing this every day when they know the consequences."

"The next time you feel you have to reach for your phone to make a call or to check the text message you just got or to do something else that takes your mind off of driving, please remember Chuck and Cassy and all the lives this crash has affected in a negative way."

Maurer says her group, Minnesotans Fighting Distracted Driving, will spread the word on the dangers of distracted driving to businesses, schools and communities throughout the state.

The driver who caused the crash, a teenage girl from Little Falls, was sentenced in March to four years' probation and 240 hours of community service.

April is Distracted Driving Prevention Month.
