Listener Survey – Would You Rather Have Storm Coverage or Code Words?

I really can't believe that I need to ask our audience to participate in this survey, but we have had multiple emails and calls about code words and we need your input.

Tuesday night we had severe weather rolling through Central Minnesota that prompted our 6 stations to go into simulcast mode and keep our audience as safe as possible. When a tornado warning is issued for our listening area, we go into full on storm coverage mode, bringing in our staff meteorologists, our own eyewitness reports from our staff and our listeners as well as the latest radar images to give you the latest information on the storm that is affecting our area.

When we do this simulcast coverage, everything else stops - music, commercials, games, everything we "normally" do.

The storms came rolling in during the 5pm hour on Tuesday and we went into simulcast mode around 5:10pm. The code word is normally given around 5:25. Obviously we were dealing with a tornado warning at that moment so the code word wasn't given out. We continued our coverage until 7pm.

On Tuesday night and Wednesday morning we received a few angry emails and a couple of angry phone calls because I didn't give out the code word. No code word was given, no one else got a leg up on anyone by getting it secretly, but still they called and emailed. The tone of these emails and calls was how dare we give storm coverage and not give out a code.

So now I have to ask you, the listener. Which would you rather have? The latest coverage of a tornado warning bearing down on your house? Or a code word worth 2500 points so you can enter to win a pair of tickets?
