Your furnace can be your best friend during an average Minnesota winter day, not to mention during a bitter cold snap like the one we're having now. You don't want that friend to quit on you, so here are some tips on how to keep your furnace healthy, happy, and keeping your family warm.

  1. Replace the filter. Or clean the filter if it's of the permanent variety. The better a filter is at collecting allergens, the quicker it becomes clogged and needs to be replaced. At a minimum, it's recommended that you do this 3-4 times a year.
  2. Get your furnace a checkup. It's recommended that you get your furnace a check-up once a year. The older the furnace, the more important the check-up. Just like us humans.
  3. De-clutter. Keep the area around your furnace clean and unobstructed.
  4. It's healthy to vent. Don't close more than 20% of the vents in your home. This can cause high resistance and makes your furnace work harder.
  5. Use a Carbon Monoxide detector. Not for your furnace's health, but for yours. Could save your life!

Stay warm. Stay safe.
