I started babysitting at a young age for my younger brother and sisters. It's a job that nine times out of ten I did for free. My parents said it was part of my family "contribution."

The first time I babysat for someone else's kids outside of my family, it was a little awkward. I wasn't sure what to expect as far as pay went. My first babysitting gig paid one dollar per hour. It's safe to say I decided not to babysit for that person again.

Today I realized just how much money I was saving my parents over the years. According to a recent survey on Care.com, teens these days make an average of $13.50 per hour babysitting. Five years ago, the average was $10.50 per hour.

If you really want to make the big bucks you'll want to move to California where they pay $16.65 per hour. (I think I'm in the wrong business!) About 85 percent of the people surveyed said that they would give their babysitter a raise if asked for one.

Do you think $13.50 per hour is a fair price for a babysitter?
