Shortly after the first of the year, I pledged that I was going to lose weight and try to lead a healthier lifestyle, and so far, I've stuck to it. For the most part. How are you doing on your New Year’s resolutions?

I was talking to someone recently about how I kept my New Year's resolution and they seemed surprised that someone they know actually made a resolution and stuck to it! I am happy to say that shortly after the first of the year, I pledged that I was going to lead a healthier lifestyle, and so far, I've stuck to it. For the most part.

You see, I have a weakness in the form of pizza. I used to sit down and eat an entire frozen pizza no problem. I’d wash it down with a beer to two, and then have ice cream for dessert and I never gained an ounce. That was because I ran four miles a day and I was also in my 20’s with a lightning fast metabolism. Fast forward a few years and that’s not possible anymore and the pounds started to pack on. I smoked, I didn't feel good and I was unmotivated.

Then I was diagnosed as a severe asthmatic and things had to change. I knew if I changed everything all at once, I’d quit and go back to my old ways, so I did it slowly.

First, I quit smoking and I am happy to say I have been smoke free since December 21, 2012.

Next, I had to take care of my expanding waistline.

When we bought our house, we asked the former occupants if we could have their treadmill. They gladly left it behind, because, let’s be honest, who wants to move something like that? So after the first of the year, my husband and I decided that we needed to get moving and we started using the treadmill. I say started because it was just collecting dust in the basement. We moved in three years ago.

I decided walking was boring if you’re not going anywhere, so I joined the gym. I know I’m not going to get to the gym every day, so I didn't tell myself I was going to workout seven days a week. If I get there four days a week, I’m satisfied. Oh. And I’m not walking. I got back in the pool. I have been swimming since I was 11 months old. It’s one of the only exercises that brings me joy.

I am proud to say that Glen and I have stuck to our resolutions and I am down 17 pounds since January 6. I have lost 8 inches off my waist and 6 inches off my hips. I know the weight would come off faster if I didn't eat pizza, but it’s just so darn good. The thing is now, I don’t eat a whole pizza. Three slices and I’m full. I also don’t wash it down with beer anymore. Flavored water is my poison.

Even though we’re coming into April and some have blown their resolutions, it’s never too late to get back in the saddle and accomplish what you set out to do in January.

Good luck!
