Poor Planning Made Garth Brooks’ Las Vegas Special an Intimate Affair
Sometimes, poor planning can actually turn into something pretty spectacular — at least in the case of superstar Garth Brooks.
The singer’s ‘Garth Brooks, Live From Las Vegas’ television special from the Wynn Las Vegas dominated television ratings, doubling the viewers of even pop queen Lady Gaga. However, if you noticed what he was wearing, it certainly wasn’t elaborate like many of Gaga’s outfits. In fact, Brooks was downright dressed down. As in, really dressed down, wearing a pullover hoodie, jeans, construction boots and a ball cap! And therein lies the poor planning.
Brooks tells industry publication Country Aircheck why, exactly, he was wearing the extremely casual outfit. “The whole thing started when I got my time zones screwed up the first time I was going up to Vegas to sound check the room at the Wynn,” he explains. “I’m on my tractor when Steve Wynn calls and says, ‘Where the hell are you? The plane is waiting for you to come here and play.’ I look like crap, I’m wearing work boots and smell like diesel, but I grab my guitars and head for the plane.”
Once he landed in Vegas, Brooks didn’t change into anything snazzy, but that wasn’t his idea. “I show up at the theater and play the sound check show,” the singer shares. “And Wynn says, ‘I want you to dress just like that.’ He thought it was meant to be and that it looked like I just came from the living room. He was comfortable with the way I was dressed and said there was no other show in Vegas like it.”
However, the singer wasn’t so sure. Wear construction boots at a luxury resort and casino? “I thought he was crazy,” Brooks admits. “But I have to hand it to him. Everyone who walked out of there said it felt like a living room, and a lot of it was just how casually we approached it.”
So, poor planning turned the star’s show into an incredibly intimate affair — something that can be difficult to do in such an expansive venue with one of the world’s most recognizable country singers. Perhaps Brooks should don a hoodie more often!
