I've always been under the impression that the later you stay at work, the better it makes you look--because you're putting in more time at the office, thus working harder.

A recent study found that's not the case. Here's why:

1. Leaving work on time gives you  more discipline. You want to be as productive with the time you're scheduled to be at work as possible. You'll spend more time getting work done and less time getting distracted.

2. You increase your overall happiness. The reasoning is, you'll have more time to do things you want to be doing. You'll be less of a workaholic.

3. The quality of your work will improve. You'll have more time to cook your own lunches, exercise, pay your bills and clean your house. When you're satisfied with these areas of your life, you'll be more focused on your work and less distracted by all of the things "not getting done" in your life.

4. If you're a boss, your employees will be happier. When the boss is always working late, employees feel more pressure to work late. This will create an unhappy atmosphere in the work place.
