Does Every Dad Say The Same Thing?
Father’s Day is Sunday, so we took a super scientific poll to see if all dads say the same things.
Father Knows Best wasn’t just the name of a TV series. Dad is a pretty smart guy and the older I get, the smarter he is. We asked you to tell us something your dad always said, so here are your favorite “Dad-isms”.
Jim – “Have you checked the oil?”
Cindy – “Well, I’ll be damned.” Apparently he said this to her whenever she walked in the door whether he knew she was coming or not. It’s very similar to my dad who would say, “Well, look who’s alive!” whenever I would come downstairs past noon on the weekend.
"Go ask your mother."Sue – “It’s not how fast you drive to the fire, it’s how soon you leave the fire station.”
Peggy – “Why sit around and look at 4 white walls?”
Todd – “Keep ‘er cool” which is also similar to my grandmother’s phrase “Take ‘er cool” because she thinks we all work too hard.
Brendan – “Happier than a meadowlark in May.”
Julie – “It’s just as easy to fill the top half of the tank as it is the bottom half.”
Julie M. “Go ask your mother.” Which is similar to my Dad always asking “Where’s your mother?” It’s so cute because my Mom and Dad have been married for 39 years and he doesn’t like to do anything without her.
Lori has two – “I can’t stop on a dime, you know.” This one is from when she asked if they could go to the Dairy Queen. Her dad said yes, and she said, “DAD! It’s right there!” and he responded “I can’t stop on a dime, you know.” It has actually become a running joke in our family now! The other one she had was “If I want any crap out of you I’ll squeeze your neck.” I never heard it, but I could imagine her dad saying this. (FULL DISCLOSURE – Lori is my cousin.)
Our very own Pete Hanson – “Think like a rock.”
Sarah – “Somebody’s going to get hurt.” Which I have also heard her dad say. (FULL DISCLOSURE – Sarah is also my cousin.)
Amy – “If I’m lyin’, I’m dyin'” Which I have heard her dad say. (Full disclosure – Amy is my bestie.)
Anne said “This one is tough! Here’s my top 3″ 1. Trust God. Seek truth. 2. Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly. 3. Always take the high road. Those are all very good, Anne!
Jon – “You’ll get nothing… and like it!”
"If I want any crap out of you I’ll squeeze your neck."Teri – “Is that the hill you wanna die on?” “Figures don’t lie but liars figure” “If you’ve lost your temper, you’ve lost the argument” Oh, I miss that guy!!!!
Mary – “It’s always darkest before the dawn.”
Rachel – “We’ve always been buddies, you and I!”
Tom – “Do what I say not what I do”
Andrea – “Go get me the flex head combination socket wrench. 5/8’s” 20 minutes later, bring him 8 wrenches in the hope one is correct. “No, I said ‘the 5/8 inch flex head combination socket wrench’.” What does that even mean and WHY do you need so many wrenches? Why?!?
There were two that were overwhelmingly popular with ALL dads, mine included: “Money doesn’t grow on trees!” and “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about!”
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads!
