Barbara Fairchild – “The Teddy Bear Song” -- 1973

 

 

Don Earl and Nick Nixon wrote “The Teddy Bear Song” and was recorded by Barbara Fairchild.  It was released in December 1972 and was Fairchild’s only number one hit, topping the chart in March of 1973.

IN THE NEWS IN 1973:

  • President Nixon goes on national TV, accepts responsibility --  but not the blame -- for Watergate.
  • U.S. Supreme Court rules on Roe Versus Wade.
  • On May 10th Bruce Lee collapses in Hong Kong where doctors diagnose him with Cerebral Edema.

Freddy Fender – “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” -- 1975

 

 

Freddy Fender wrote and recorded “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.” The song became a major country hit topping the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles Chart in August 1975.

IN THE NEWS IN 1975:

  • The city of Saigon is surrendered and remaining Americans are evacuated ending the Vietnam War on April 30th.
  • President Ford escapes assassination attempts in Sacramento, California on September 5th; Ford escapes a second assassination attempt on September 22nd.

Mickey Gilley – “Stand by Me” -- 1980

 

 

Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote “Stand by Me.” It was recorded by Mickey Gilley in 1980.  The song peaked at number one in June 1980 from the movie, "Urban Cowboy."

IN THE NEWS IN 1980:

  • An extremely harsh heat wave killed over 1,250 people in the United States.
  • Miracle on Ice, during the Winter Olympics, U.S. hockey team won Gold against the Soviets.
  • Rubik’s Cube and Post-It Notes appear on the market.

Johnny Lee – “The Yellow Rose” -- 1984

 

 

“The Yellow Rose” was written by Johnny Lee, Lane Brody and John Wilder.  Recorded by Lee and Brody, “The Yellow Rose” was a number one country hit in February of 1984.

IN THE NEWS IN 1984:

  • Minnesota’s Walter Mondale won the Democratic Presidential nomination.
  • Ma Bell system breaks up
  • The minimum wage is  $3.35
  • Miss America winner Vanessa Williams resigns July 23rd after posing in Playboy.

Loretta Lynn – “Out of my Head and Back in my Bed” -- 1977

 

 

“Out of my Head and Back in my Bed” is a 1977 single written by Peggy Forman and recorded by Loretta Lynn.  It was Lynn’s twelfth and last number one on the country chart as a solo artist.

IN THE NEWS IN 1977:

  • The space shuttle Enterprise -- sitting atop a Boeing 747 -- goes on its maiden flight above the Mojave Desert.
  • Film director Roman Polanski is charged with rape, sodomy, child molestation and giving drugs to a minor in the case of a 13-year-old girl's sexual assault at the home of Hollywood star Jack Nicholson.
