SAUK RAPIDS -- Our area's fastest hands put their skills to the test in 2017's Best Bagger competition.

Held at the Sauk Rapid's Coborns, 35 challengers met in the parking lot Tuesday evening. While everyone gave their all, only one could come out with the best bag.

Coborn's Communication's Specialist Kevin Hurd says, it's about a lot more than just speed.

"Distribution of weight in the bag, proper bag-building technique and then also proper style attitude and appearance, really thinking about this that our employees are interacting with our guests out here as well..."

This year's first place winner is a repeat champion, Tyler Haselkamp from the Clearwater Coborn's.

Haselkamp says, he's got a few people to thank.

"I couldn't do this without my co-workers, they're enthusiastic and they push me, and mom and dad, can't forget them, wouldn't be here without them."

Haselkamp says his goal this year is Vegas for the national best bagger contest. Patrick Garcia from the Belle Plain store took 3rd, and Mason Makarrall, also from Clearwater's store took 2nd.

Garcia won $25, Makarrall $50, and Haselkamp won the $100 grand prize. The state competition will in August at the Mall of America, and nationals will be held in Vegas in February, with a grand prize of $10,000 on the line.

Since 1989, five Coborn's employees have advanced to the National Competition.
