Bucky Covington and his fiancee appeared on a recent episode of The Doctors, hoping to find treatment for their infant daughter.

The American Idol alumni and Katherine Cook, a Nashville publicist, welcomed Kennedy Taylor Covington on Oct. 10, 2014. The singer immediately noticed that his daughter's arm was purple.

He thought she might have gotten bruised during the delivery, but it wasn't long before her arm turned red and began to swell. "Within maybe a week we started to know that it was something different," Cook says. "It started to swell and gather blood, and it was getting pretty nasty-looking."

"And painful," Covington adds. "Every time you go to take a shirt off your little girl, she's just bawling, and you know why. It's just heartbreaking."

The couple sought medical help, and Kennedy was diagnosed with infantile hemangioma, one of the most common types of congenital tumors in children.

According to The Doctors contributor Dr. Jennifer Ashton, hemangiomas are vascular malformations that affect blood vessels, resulting in discoloration. They can be any size and appear anywhere on the body. They generally shrink and eventually disappear, but larger hemangiomas can require treatment.

“When this first starts coming to the table, you are scared to death,” Covington says. The singer was concerned that the condition would cause Kennedy to be self-conscious as she grew older.

Fortunately, there's a treatment, as Covington and Cook shared during their appearance on the show on Thursday (Feb. 26). Kennedy was prescribed Propranolol, which Dr. Travis Stork explains is an oral beta-blocker that is usually employed to lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate, but in this instance is being applied in an off-label use.

Dr. Steve Goudy says that within weeks or months of beginning the medication, the hemangiomas will turn gray and slowly go away — which is surely good news for Kennedy, since Covington says his initial thought was to cover her entire arm with a sleeve tattoo.
