Carl Wempner joined the Army reserves when he was 18. He is now 33. He just re-enlisted for six more years. He has been on two tours to Iraq.  His current rank is Sergeant.  He and his wife have a 7-year-old girl, Allyson. Their son Ben, who passed away almost three years ago, would have been 9.

Here's the letter from his wife Brandy:

I would like to nominate my husband for Veteran of the month because he has been through so much each time he has been deployed. The first time in 2003 he missed the birth of our son. When he returned home our son was already 3 months old. The second deployment in 2008 was extremely hard. When he left our son had just been diagnosed with epilepsy.

While away Ben (our son) was hospitalized and diagnosed with a terminal illness. Since then our son has passed away and my husband has still been the strongest man I know. He loves this country and is dedicated to the military. Through the years there have been many sacrifices with missed birthdays and holidays and summer activities, but he wouldn't change a thing. Defending this country is important and I am so proud of him and very proud to be his wife!!!
