The smell of popcorn and mini-doughnuts filled the air as Apollo High School beat Breck High School with a score of 1-0 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the State Boy's Hockey Tournament at Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul last night.

There were 4,697 people in attendance who watched junior goaltender Nick Althaus block 25 shots on goal. Brandon Bissett made the game winning shot with just 2:53 left in overtime.

I love hockey and of course, as an Apollo graduate, I was cheering on the eagles. It was a late night for fans, who were sporting a sea of red, white and blue, but they kept up a high energy with encouraging chants throughout the game.

Apollo advances to the state semifinals to take on Hermantown at 1 p.m. Friday at Xcel Energy Center. You can listen to the game live on our sister station, AM 1390 The Fan. Dave Overlund will have the call.

Check out a video of the cheering section as well as the post game press conference with Apollo's Hockey Coach Pete Matanich and players Gino Lucia, Bissett and Althaus.
