Mel Tillis – “Send Me Down to Tucson” -- 1979

 

A song written by Snuff Garret and Cliff Crofford reaching number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

In the news in 1979, the United States and Soviet Union reach an agreement during the strategic Arms Limitations Talks during June of 1979.  Sony introduces the Sony Walkman costing $200.

 

No one wants to go down to Tucson in the summer, so this time the boss chose me.

 


 

Tanya Tucker – “Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stones)” --  1974

 

Released December 31, 1973, it topped the country chart on March 30, 1974 it was Tucker’s third number one hit song.  David Allen Coe is the song writer and was produced by Bill Sherrill.

In the news in 1974, worldwide inflation helps to cause dramatic increases in the cost of fuel, food and manufacturing.  The Soviet Union launches the Salyut-4 Space Station.

Alabama – “Old Flame” -- 1981

 

Written by Donny Lowery and Mac McAnally from the album “Feels So Right.”  It became the group's third number one single on the Billboard Hot Singles Chart.

In the news in 1981, on January 19th, United States and Iranian officials sign an agreement to release 52 American hostages after 14 months of captivity.  On November 16th, Luke and Laura marry on the soap opera “General Hospital." It is the highest rated hour in daytime television history.  General Hospital is still on the air to this date.

Dan Seals – “God Must be a Cowboy” -- 1984

 

Dan Seals wrote and recorded this top ten country hit, reaching number ten on the country chart.

In the news in 1984, on January 1st US Bell system is broken up, the United States and the Vatican re-established full diplomatic relations.  Ronald Reagan carries 49 states in the electoral college and wins the presidency.  Walter Mondale wins only his home state of Minnesota by a mere 3,761 vote margin and the District of Columbia.

George Strait – “Amarillo by Morning” -- 1983

 

Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser wrote this song.  Stafford recorded the song in 1973, George Strait covered the song in 1983 and made it a top ten hit peaking at number four.

In the news in 1983, On February 28th the final episode of M.A.S.H. airs setting a new record for most-watched television broadcast in American History.  In April US embassy bombing in Beirut kills 63 people.
