Dwight Yoakam – “Honky-Tonk Man” -- 1986

 

 

“Honky-Tonk Man” was written by Johnny Horton, Tillman Franks and Howard Hausey.  Horton originally recorded the song in 1956.  Dwight Yoakam covered the song in 1986.  Yoakam’s version peaked at number three on the Country Chart on June 14, 1986.

Loretta Lynn – “You’re Looking at Country” -- 1971

 

 

Loretta Lynn wrote and recorded “You’re Looking at Country.”  This song peaked at number five on the Country Chart after being released May 7, 1971.

Making news in 1971:

  • A new stock market index called the NASDAQ debuts.
  • 1971 could be the year that marked the start of the digital age when the microprocessor is invented
  • Amtrak is created to provide US inter-city passenger train services.

Merle Haggard and Clint Eastwood – “Bar Room Buddies” -- 1980

 

 

“Bar Room Buddies” is a song written by Milton Brown, Cliff Crofford, Steve Dorff and Snuff Garret and was recorded by Merle Haggard and actor Clint Eastwood.  It’s from the soundtrack from the film, ‘Bronco Billy.’  The song went to number one on the Billboard Country Chart.

In the news in 1980:

  • Three US nuns and a lay worker are found shot in El Salvador.
  • The US Supreme Court upholds limits on federal aid for abortions.

Gene Watson – “Paper Rosie” -- 1977

 

 

This song is written and originally recorded by Dallas Harms.  Gene Watson covered the song in January 1977 taking the song to number three on the Hot Country Singles Chart.

Making news in 1977:

  • Space Shuttle Enterprise glides on its maiden flight above the Mojave Desert.
  • A lightning bolt strikes a substation on the Hudson River and puts New York City area in a blackout for 25 hours.
  • Crude oil from Alaska begins flowing south down the trans-Alaska pipeline to the Port of Valdez, Alaska.

The Bellamy Brothers – “Redneck Girl” -- 1982

 

 

“Redneck Girl” is a song written by David Bellamy and recorded by the country duo, The Bellamy Brothers.  The song scored a number one spot on the country chart.

In the news in 1982:

  • The first CD player is sold.
  • Argentina invades the Falkland Islands.
  • And a major recession hits the United States.

 

Redneck girl likes to cruise in daddy’s pick-up truck and a redneck girl plays it hard when she’s down on her luck.
