Brooks and Dunn – “My Maria” -- 1996

 

 

“My Maria” is written by B.W. Stevenson and Daniel Moore.  When Country duo Brooks and Dunn released a cover version of “My Maria,” the song reached number one on the country chart.

 

IN THE NEWS IN 1982:

  • February 2 becomes the coldest temperature ever recorded in Minnesota history, reaching minus 60 degrees in Tower, MN.
  • University of Minnesota Transplant Surgeon John Najarian is acquitted of all charges involving a program that developed and manufactured a transplant drug called ALG. The U’s medical school suffers a severe blow in standing after receiving sanctions from the National Institutes of Health.

Kris Kristofferson – “Why Me” -- 1973

 

 

“Why Me” is written and recorded by Kris Kristofferson.  Backing vocals were provided by Rita Coolidge and Larry Gatlin.  The song reached number one on the country chart in May 1973.

 

IN THE NEWS:

  • Retaliation for their 1967 defeat,  Egypt and Syria attack Israel over occupied lands.  In less than a month, however, the Israelis win the war and a U.S.-pressured cease fire begins.
  • The American Indian Movement seizes the Wounded Knee, South Dakota hamlet for 90 days before surrendering.  It is a protest of violations to American Indian treaties over the past centuries.

Lynn Anderson – “What a Man, My Man Is” -- 1974

 

 

This song was written by Glenn Sutton and recorded by Lynn Anderson.  The song peaked at number one the last week of 1974.

 

IN THE NEWS IN 1974:

  • OPEC ends the oil embargo that had begun in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War.
  • India successfully tests an atomic device becoming the world’s sixth nuclear power.
  • TheMinnesota Vikings lose to Miami 24-to-7 in the Super Bowl.

Charly McClain – “Radio Heart” -- 1985

 

 

“Radio Heart” is written by Stephen Davis and Dennis Morgan and recorded by Charly McClain.  The song peaked at number one on the country chart.

 

IN THE NEWS IN 1985:

  • The Eastern half of North America is hit with an exceptionally cold winter, one of the worst in recorded history.
  • A joint American-French expedition locates the wreck of HMS Titanic
  • The Unabomber kills his first victim

 

Married at 16, 2 kids by 21, but he couldn’t take it, now she’s raisin’ them on her own.

 


 

Susan Raye – “L.A. International Airport” -- 1971

 

 

“L.A. International Airport” is written by Leanne Scott that became a top ten hit for Susan Raye, reaching number nine on the country chart.  The song was recorded with updated lyrics in 2003 by Shirley Myers for the 75th Anniversary of LAX.  Susan Raye, who has been retired from the music industry since 1986 made a rare public appearance to sing her classic hit at the concert celebration and was on hand when a proclamation was issued to make the song the official song of LAX.
IN THE NEWS IN 1971:

  • President Mobutu renames the Democratic Republic of Congo, establishing Zaire.
  • The Allman Brothers' Duane Allman dies in a motorcycle accident at age 24.
