Deborah Allen – “Baby I Lied” -- 1983

 

 

When Deborah Allen released her top ten hit, “Baby I Lied” from the vinyl album, "Cheat the Night," the introduction of noise-free compact discs occurred. And that’s when vinyl records began their steep decline.  “Baby I Lied” reached number four on the Billboard Country Chart.  The song was written by Allen, Rafe Vanhoy and Rory Bourke.

Did I say I wouldn’t be hurt if our love just didn’t work.

 


 

David Frizzell and Shelly West – “I Just Came Here to Dance” -- 1982

 

 

The same year “I Just Came Here to Dance” from the album, "The David Frizzell and Shelly West Album" was released, John Belushi dies of a drug overdose at age 33.  The song was written by Ken Bell, Terry Skinner and J.L. Wallace.  It reached number four on the Billboard Hot Country Chart.

I just came here to dance, I was feeling lonely.

 


 

Donna Fargo – “Funny Face” -- 1972

 

 

A song written by Donna Fargo released in July of 1972.  A month before the release of this number two classic country hit, five men are apprehended by police in the attempt to bug Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington D.C.’s Watergate Complex.  It was the start of the Watergate scandal, June 17th.

Funny face, I love you, funny face I need you, my whole world’s wrapped up in you.

 


 

Merle Haggard – “If we’re Not Back in Love by Monday” -- 1977

 

 

This song is written by Sonny Throckmorton and Glenn Martin and recorded by the “Hag”.  It was released in March 1977 from the album ‘Ramblin’ Fever.’  The song reached number two on Billboards Hot Country Chart.  About two months before the release of this song the first women Episcopal priest ordained on January 1st.

We can call Mrs. Johnson to keep the kids a day or two, take the early flight to Florida. 

 


 

Crystal Gale – “Too Many Lovers” -- 1981

 

 

Sam Hogin, Ted Lindsay and Mark Truce wrote, “Too Many Lovers.”  It was released in May 1981 from the album, ‘These Days.’  While this song was moving up the country chart to number one for Crystal Gale, President Reagan was recovering from a gunshot wound after being shot March 30th in an assassination attempt.

You gotta be rough, you gotta be tough, if you’re gonna fall in love these days.
