Tom T. Hall – “Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine” -- 1972

 

 

This song was written and recorded by Tom T. Hall.  The song went to number one, his third on the Country Chart.

  • Governor George Wallace is shot in Alabama by Arthur Bremer at a political rally in Laurel, MD.
  • US Supreme Court rules  the death penalty is unconstitutional

Waylon Jennings – “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line” -- 1968

 

 

Jimmy Bryant wrote “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line” and recorded by Waylon Jennings.  The song reached number two on the Country Chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1968:

  • North Vietnamese launch the Tet Offensive, a turning point in the Vietnam War
  • Senator Robert F. Kennedy is shot and critically wounded in Los Angeles hotel after winning California primary June 5th. He dies on June 6th.

Loretta Lynn – “Coal Miner’s Daughter” -- 1970

 

 

This Country song was written and recorded by Loretta Lynn.  It became Lynn’s signature song topping the country chart at number one.

IN THE NEWS IN 1970:

  • An earthquake kills more than 50,000 in Peru on May 31st
  • FCC regulation requires separate ownership of television networks and studios

 

Well I was born the coal miner’s daughter in cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler.

 


 

George Jones and Tammy Wynette – “We’re Gonna Hold On” -- 1973

 

 

George Jones and Earl Montgomery wrote this duet.  It was recorded by George Jones and Tammy Wynette.  The song topped the chart at number one for two weeks.

  • Vice President Spiro Agnew resigns, pleading "no contest" to charges of tax evasion
