Tammy Wynette wrote this song with David Lindsay and Glenn Tubb.  The song reached number two on the country chart.

Vince Matthews and Kent Westbury wrote “Love in the Hot Afternoon” and was recorded by Gene Watson.  The song scored a number three on Billboards Hot Country Singles Chart.

Johnny Cash – “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” -- 1970

 

 

Kris Kristofferson wrote, “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and recorded by Johnny Cash.  The song went to number one on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1970:

  • A cyclone in Bangladesh kills 500,000
  • The cost of a gallon of gas is 36 cents

Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head, that didn’t hurt and the beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad.

 


 

Ricky Van Shelton – “Crime of Passion” -- 1987

 

 

“Crime of Passion” is written by Walt Aldridge and Mac McAnally and was recorded by Ricky Van Shelton.  It became a top ten hit resting at number seven.

IN THE NEWS IN 1987:

  • In May, the US Supreme Court Rules Rotary Clubs must admit women
  • No Smoking rules take effect in US federal buildings
  • Prozac is released for use in the US by Eli-Lilly and Company

Bobbie Gentry – “Ode to Billie Joe” -- 1967

 

 

Bobbie Gentry wrote and recorded “Ode to Billie Joe.”  This song generated eight Grammy nominations, three wins for Bobbie Gentry.

  • Muhammad Ali is stripped of his boxing World Championship for refusing to be inducted into the US Army
  • Interracial marriage is declared constitutional by the Supreme Court
  • Jimmy Hoffa begins an eight-year prison term for defending the Union and jury tampering
