Suzy Bogguss – “Aces” -- 1992

 

 

“Aces” is written by Cheryl Wheeler and recorded by Suzy Bogguss, from the album of the same name.  This song peaked at number nine on the Country Singles Chart in July 1992.

IN THE NEWS IN 1992:

  • On June 16th, Minnesota experiences its busiest tornado day ever with 27 recorded twisters, the largest tornado is an F5 that struck Chandler, Minnesota killing one.
  • President Bush pardons former Reagan administration officials involved in Iran-Contra affair on December 24th.
  • Johnny Carson hosts the Tonight Show for the last time. He ruled late night television for 30 years.

Glen Campbell – “Sunflower” -- 1977

 

 

Neil Diamond wrote “Sunflower.” The song was recorded by Glen Campbell and released in June 1977.  The song topped the country chart at number four.

IN THE NEWS IN 1977:

  • New York City blackout lasts for 25 hours and results in looting and disorder.
  • Seattle Slew becomes only the 10th horse to win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes on May 7th.
  • The World Trade Center in New York is completed.

Mel Tillis – “I Believe In You” -- 1978

 

 

This song is written by Gene Dunlap and Buddy Cannon and recorded by Mel Tillis.  This  was Tillis’ fourth number one on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1978:

  • Jim Jones’ followers commit mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana on November 18th.
  • Minnesota favorite song Hubert Humphrey dies in January.
  • Illinois Bell Company introduces first ever cellular mobile phone system.

Kenny Rogers – “Coward of the County” -- 1979

 

 

Roger Bowling and Bill Wheeler wrote “Coward of the County.’  A million selling gold certified record, it was one of Kenny Rogers' biggest hits, topping the chart at number one.

IN THE NEWS IN 1979:

  • 52 American’s are taken hostage in Tehran, Iran for 444 days, four days later ABC’s Nightline premiered centering on the crisis.
  • The Minnesota Daily publishes its “Christ Speaks!”  Parody issue featuring sexual references, promoting the U of M administration to try to take back a portion of the Daily’s student activity fee, a court takes a dim view of the U of M’s attempt to interfere with the First Amendment.

Everyone considered him the coward of the county; he never stood one single time.

 


 

 

Garth Brooks – “The Dance” -- 1990

 

 

“The Dance” is written by Tony Arata and recorded by Garth Brooks.  This song is considered a signature song for Brooks.

IN THE NEWS IN 1990:

  • 99% of US households have at least one radio with the average owning five.
  • The F.D.A. approves use of the surgically implanted contraceptive Norplant.
  • During February of 1990, Nelson Mandela iss released from prison in South Africa after 27 years of imprisonment.
