Good morning! It’s the third Sunday in August and we’re live with the 98 Country Classic Show.  We’re on air at 98.1 FM, online at and we’re mobile with our Radiopup app.

In addition to our four hour journey into country music, we feature five videos.  Today we’re recalling some of the biggest hits of 1976.

Making the News in 1976:

  • The US Supreme Court rules blacks and other minorities are entitled to retroactive job seniority;
  • President Ford signs the Federal Election Campaign Act May 11th;
  • The nation celebrates its 200th birthday — its Bicentennial — July 4th;
  • The country elects Jimmy Carter President November 2nd;
  • At the movies — “Rocky,” “Taxi-Driver,” “Network” and “All the President’s Men”;
  • And the cost of a first class stamp is 13 cents.

On country music radio, we were listening to a duet by George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, Connie Smith, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.

George Jones and Tammy Wynette – “Golden Ring”

“Golden Ring” was written by Bobby Braddock and Rafe Van Hoy.  “Golden Ring” was originally released in 1976. The song was the title track to George Jones and Tammy Wynette‘s duet album released that same year.  It was a number one hit on the Billboard Country Charts.

Charlie Rich – “Since I Fell For You”

Charlie Rich, nicknamed the ‘Silver Fox,” recorded “Since I Fell For You.”  It was released as a single from the 1976 album ‘Everytime You Touch Me (I Get High).”  “Since I Fell For You” peaked at number ten.

It’s so bad, it’s so sad but I’m in Love, in love with you.

Connie Smith – “(Til) I Kissed You”

Don Everly of the Everly Brothers wrote “(Til) I Kissed You.” It was released  as a single in 1959 and peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.  Connie Smith covered the song on her 1976 album, “The Song We Fell In Love To.”  Smith’s version peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

Johnny Cash – “One Piece at a Time”

“One Piece at a Time” is a country novelty song written by Wayne Kemp and recorded by Johnny Cash.  It would be the last song performed by Cash to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  The song tells of a man who in 1949, leaves his home in Kentucky to pursue work at General Motors in Detroit, Michigan.

Dolly Parton – “All I Can Do”

This song was written and performed by Dolly Parton.  It was released in May 1976 as the second single from the album of the same title.  The single topped out at number three on the Country Singles Chart.  Here is some of the lyrics:

It’s all I can do to keep from falling in love with you, all I can do to keep from letting it show.
