George Strait – “Amarillo by Morning” -- 1983

 

 

Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser wrote this song, several cover versions have been made including a major 1983 hit for George Strait.  Making news this year, US invades Grenada, second space shuttle, Challenger, makes successful maiden voyage, which includes the first US space walk in nine years.

Sweethearts of the Rodeo – “Midnight Girl/Sunset Town” -- 1986

 

 

Don Schlitz wrote this song, recorded by country music duo Sweethearts of the Rodeo.  It was released in 1986 as a single from the album, ‘Sweethearts of the Rodeo,’ “Midnight Girl/Sunset Town” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  Making news in Minnesota in January of 1986, three Gopher basketball players were arrested on rape charges in Madison, Wisconsin.  Coach Jim Dutcher quits in protest and all players are acquitted.

I was born in a small town, mama was a farmer’s wife, we knew everyone for miles around, we lived here all our lives.

 


 

Conway Twitty – “Play Guitar Play” -- 1977

 

 

“Play Guitar Play” is written and recorded by Conway Twitty.  It was released in February 1977, the song became Twitty’s 19th number one on the country chart.  Making news in Minnesota in June 1977, Duluth heiress Elisabeth Congdon is smothered to death in her bed and her night nurse is bludgeoned to death in the Congdon Mansion.  Congdon’s son in law, Roger Caldwell is later convicted of the crime.

Dottie West – “A Lesson in Leavin’” -- 1980

 

 

“A Lesson in Leavin’” is written by Randy Goodrum and Brent Maher, recorded in 1980 by Dottie West who brought the song to number one on the Billboard Country Chart.  Making world headlines in 1980, six US Embassy aides escape from Iran with Canadian help on January 29th.

Somebody’s gonna give you a lesson in leavin’, somebody’s gonna give you back what you’ve been givin’  

 


 

Tanya Tucker – “Here’s Some Love” 1976

 

 

Jack Roberts and Richard Mainegra wrote “Here’s Some Love” off the album of the same name.  The song was released in 1976 and became a number one country hit for Tanya Tucker.  In the news the nation celebrates its Bi-centennial on July 4th.  Jimmy Carter elected President, here in Minnesota a January snowstorm damages 325 cars in a pileup on a Minneapolis freeway.
