Juice Newton – “Queen of Hearts” -- 1981

 

 

“Queen of Hearts” is the title of a country-pop song written by Hank DeVito, it’s from the album ‘Juice.’  The song peaked at number two on Billboard Hot Country Singles chart for two weeks in September 1981.  Just before this song top the country chart, air traffic controllers went on strike, disrupting flights in August.  The government fired the strikers on August 11th.

Midnight and I’m a waiting on the twelve-oh-five, hoping it’ll take me just a little farther down the line.

 


 

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – “Dance Little Jean” -- 1983

 

 

It’s a song written by Jimmy Ibbotson and recorded by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.  It was released in 1983 from the album ‘Let’s Go.’  The song reached number nine on Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.  In late October-- at about this time --  the US invades Grenada October 25th.

I played a wedding for the money and I wished that I could’ve told the bride and groom just what I think of marriage. 

 


 

Mel Tillis – “Coca-Cola Cowboy” -- 1979

 

 

Steve Dorff, Sandy Pinkard, Sam Atchley and Bud Dain wrote this song and recorded by Mel Tillis. The song was released in June 1979 from the album ‘Mr. Entertainer.’  It was Tillis’ fifth number one hit.  A top headline in the news in June 1979, President Jimmy Carter and Soviet leader Brezhnev sign the Salt II Agreement.

I called collect on the phone, you say you’re tired and alone but it sounds like someone is lying there.

 


 

Charly McClain – “Who’s Cheatin’ Who" -- 1980

 

 

“Who’s Cheatin’ Who” is written by Jerry Hayes and recorded by Charly McClain.  The song is from the album of the same name. Released in November 1980, it peaked at number one.  This was the same year Ted Turner launched CNN, the first cable news network.

Roger Miller – “Chug-a-Lug” -- 1964

 

 

“Chug-a-Lug” is a song written and recorded by Roger Miller.  It peaked at number nine on the Country Chart in 1964, released in August.  In headlines in 1964, the President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy issues The Warren Report, concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.

Chug-a-lug chug-a-lug make you wanna holler hi-de-ho.
