Today we’re featuring Johnny Cash, Mickey Gilley, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and Barbara Mandrell.

 


 

Johnny Cash – “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” -- 1970

 

 

Kris Kristofferson wrote this song and Johnny Cash recorded and released “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” from his live album, ‘The Johnny Cash Show.’  Cash’s recording won the Country Music Association Award for "Song of the Year" in 1970 and hit number one on the country chart and stayed at the position for two weeks.  It was the same year that Monday Night Football debuts on ABC with Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford and Don Meredith doing play-by-play.

Well I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt.

 


 

Mickey Gilley – “Fool for Your Love” -- 1983

 

 

“Fool for Your Love” is written by Don Singleton and recorded by Mickey Gilley.  It was released in March 1983 as single from the album of the same name.  It was Gilley’s sixteenth number one country single.  It spent twelve weeks on the country chart.  Making news in 1983 -- “crack cocaine” is developed in the Bahamas and soon appears in the United States.

I’m just a fool for you, baby I’m just a fool for your love.

 


 

Merle Haggard – “Big City” -- 1982

 

 

Merle Haggard and Dean Holloway co-wrote “Big City,” the song was released in January 1982 from the album of the same name.  By April, the song became Haggard’s 27th number one single on Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  While this song reached the top of the country chart, the British overcame Argentina in the Falklands War.

I’m tired of this dirty old city, entirely too much work and never enough play.

 


 

Conway Twitty – “Saturday Night Special” -- 1988

 

 

“Saturday Night Special” was written by Larry Bastian and Dewayne Blackwell and recorded by Conway Twitty.  It was released in June 1988 from the album ‘Still in Your Dreams.”  The song reaches number nine on Billboard's Hot Country Singles Chart.  1988 was the year compact discs outsell vinyl records for the first time.

Well I was there to buy a pistol she was there to hack her ring.

 


 

Barbara Mandrell – “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed” -- 1978

 

 

Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan wrote this song and Barbara Mandrell recorded the song.  It was released in August 1978 from the album, ‘Moods.’  It was Mandrell’s 26th chart hit on Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart, the first of six number ones on that chart.  Making news in the entraintment world -- Sony introduces the Walkman, the first portable stereo.

Sleeping single in a double bed thinking over things I wish I’d said I should have held you but I let you go now I’m the one sleeping all alone.
