Each week, we feature five additional tracks with video as our 98 Country Classic Bonus. This week, we’re featuring five classics from 1965 including Johnny Cash, Del Reeves, the Statler Brothers, Roger Miller and Buck Owens.

Johnny Cash

“Orange Blossom Special” was released as an album in 1965.  The title song was released prior to the album and reached number three on the Hot Country Singles chart.

Look a yonder comin’ down that railroad track, hey look a yonder comin’, comin’ down that railroad track, it’s the orange blossom special.

Del Reeves

“Girl on the Billboard” was released by Reeves in 1965.  It was his only number one single.  The song is about a truck driver who falls in love with a picture of a beautiful young woman on a billboard along Route 66.

Who is the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel in the picture on a billboard in Field near the big old highway?

The Statler Brothers

“Flowers on the Wall” entered Billboards Hot 100 chart on November 7, 1965.  “Flowers on the Wall” peaked at number four in January 1966.  The song spent 13 weeks on Billboard’s Top 100.

Roger Miller

“King of the Road” is a 1965 song written and recorded by Roger Miller.  A huge crossover hit reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on Billboard’s Country chart.  Miller says the song started in his mind when he was driving and saw a sign on the side of a barn that said, “Trailers for Sale or Rent.”

Buck Owens

Singer, Songwriter and guitarist Buck Owens ruled the country music scene in the mid 1960’s.  Owens produced a twangy, danceable sound that he repeated across many chart  topping singles.  “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail” became his signature song hitting number one in 1965 with his band The Buckaroos. He even performed it as part of the plot of an episode of “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
