Today we’re featuring Johnny Horton, a duet by David Houston and Tammy Wynette, George Jones, The Judds and Dottie West.

 


 

Johnny Horton – “North to Alaska” -- 1960

 

 

“North to Alaska” is a 1960 smash hit song recorded by Johnny Horton and featured in the movie of the same name starring John Wayne.  The song was at number one for five weeks, and was written by Mike Phillips.  Horton died shortly after the song was released, November 5, 1960, in an auto crash.  That's about the same time John F. Kennedy defeats Richard Nixon for US President.

David Houston and Tammy Wynette – “My Elusive Dreams” -- 1967

 

 

“My Elusive Dreams” is a country song written by Bill Sherrill and Curly Putman and recorded as a duet by David Houston and Tammy Wynette, becoming a number one hit in October 1967. At the time this song was on its way to the top spot on the country chart, Thurgood Marshall was sworn-in as the first black US Supreme Court justice on October 2, 1967.

I’d follow you to Texas, I’d follow you to Utah, we didn’t find it there so we moved on.

 


 

George Jones – “Tennessee Whiskey” -- 1983

 

 

“Tennessee Whiskey” is written by Dean Dillion and Linda Hargrove.  Originally recorded by David Allen Coe, it peaked at number 77. George Jones covered the song on his album, ‘Shine On.’  Jones’ version reached number two on Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in November 1983.  While this song was moving up the country chart, the US was invading Grenada on October 25th.

I used to spend my nights out in a bar room liquor was the only love I’ve known.

 


 

The Judds – “Mama He’s Crazy” -- 1984

 

 

Kenny O’Dell wrote “Mama He’s Crazy” which was recorded by country duo The Judds.  It was released in April 1984 from the album ‘Wynonna and Naomi.’  The song peaked at number one in May of 1984.  About eight weeks later in July, the Democratic National Convention was nominating Minnesota’s Walter Mondale for President, July 16th-July 19th.

Dottie West – “Country Sunshine” -- 1973

 

 

Dottie West, Billy Davis and Diane Whiles co-wrote “Country Sunshine.”  Remembered both as one of West’s biggest chart hits as well as a Coca-Cola jingle in popular commercial the song was released in 1973 from the album of the same name.  Making news when this song was topping the country chart at number two in October,  Spiro T. Agnew was resigning as Vice President and then pleading no contest to charges of evasion of income taxes while Governor of Maryland on October 10th.
