  • Nixon ends the US trade embargo against China
  • President Mobuto renames the Democratic Republic of Congo, establishing Zaire
  • Twenty-sixth Amendment to U.S. Constitution lowers voting age to 18
  • "All in the Family" debuts on CBS and introduces a trend in socially-conscious programming

In country music we were listening to Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Lynn Anderson, Glen Campbell and a duet from Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn.

Johnny Cash – “Man in Black”

Wonder why Johnny Cash wears black? Apparently the question had been asked so much that Cash wrote a song about his wardrobe choice.  In 1971, “Man in Black” answered the question and the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Country Chart.

Well you wonder why I always dress in black, why you never see bright colors on my back.

Dolly Parton – “Coat of Many Colors”

1971’s “Coat of Many Colors tells the real story of how Dolly Parton’s mother stitched together a coat for her daughter out of rags given to the family. As she sewed, she told her child the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. Dolly kept the original coat, which is now on display in her chasing rainbows museum at Dollywood. Dolly has often stated that of the 3,000-plus songs she’s written, this is her favorite.  The song peaked at number four on Billboard's Country Chart.

Lynn Anderson – “You’re My Man”

Glenn Sutton and Clive Davis wrote “You’re My Man.” This song was immediately released after Lynn Anderson’s song, “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” became a major country and pop hit in 1970.  “You’re My Man” was very successful, reaching the top of the Billboard Country Chart in June of 1971.  It was Anderson’s second number one.

For once in my life, I know the meaning of happiness and what it means to have a dream come true.

Glen Campbell – “Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)”

“Dream Baby” was written by Cindy Walker which was first recorded by Roy Orbison in 1962.  It was a big hit for Orbison where it reached number four on the Billboard Chart.  This song had been covered many times, including by country music artist Glen Campbell, who released it in March of 1971 as the lead single from his album, "The Last Time I Saw Her."  The song peaked at number seven on the Billbaord Hot Country Singles Chart.

Sweet dream baby, sweet dream baby, sweet dream baby how long must I dream.

Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn – “After the Fire is Gone”

This song was written by L.E. White and recorded by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty as a duet.  It was released in January of 1971 as the only single from the LP “We Only Make Believe.”  “After the Fire is Gone” was the first number one on the Country Chart for Lynn and Twitty as a duo.  It spent two weeks at number one and a total of 14 weeks on the chart.

Love is where you find it, when you find no love at home and there’s nothing cold as ashes after the fire is gone.
