Kenny Rogers – “Coward of the County” - 1979

 

 

This song is written by Roger Bowling and Billy Ed Wheeler and recorded by Kenny Rogers.  It’s from the triple platinum album, ‘Kenny’ and it became one of Rogers’ biggest hits.  It reached number one in December 1979 and stayed at that position for three weeks.

IN THE NEWS: On December 27, 1979 the Soviets invade Afghanistan and stir world protests.

Everyone considered him the coward of the county; he’d never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.

 


 

Sammi Smith – Help Me Make it Through the Night” - 1971

 

 

Born Jewel Faye Smith, we know her as Sammi Smith and best known for her 1971 crossover hit, “Help Me Make it Through the Night,” written by Kris Kristofferson.  The song went to number one in January 1971on the country chart and stayed there for three weeks.

IN THE NEWS:  Later in 1971, Intel introduces the microprocessor.

The Judds – “Mama He’s Crazy” - 1984

 

 

A country song written by Kenny O’Dell and recorded by the country music duo, The Judds, it was released in April 1984 from the album Wynonna and Naomi.  The single went to number one for one week and spent a total of fourteen weeks on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS:  In February 1984 -- a few weeks before the release of “Mama He’s Crazy” -- Italy and the Vatican agree to end Roman Catholicism as a state religion.

 


 

Alabama – “Tennessee River” - 1980

 

 

This song was written by Randy Owen and recorded by the band Alabama.  “Tennessee River” was released in April 1980 from the album ‘My Home’s in Alabama.’  The song went to number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Chart in June 1980.

IN THE NEWS:  Late in 1980, three nuns and a lady worker are found shot in El Salvador on December 4th.

I was born across the river in the mountains where I call home.

 


 

Tanya Tucker – “Love Me Like You Used To” - 1987

 

 

“Love Me Like You Used To” is from the album of the same name.  Written by Davis Emmons, the song peaked at number two and stayed there for two weeks in November 1987.

IN THE NEWS:  While this song was moving up the charts, the Minnesota Twins beat St. Louis Cardinals, 4 games to 3, to win the World Series.
