Shelly West – “Jose Cuervo” -- 1983

 

 

“Jose Cuervo” was written by Cindy Jordan in 1982 and recorded by Shelly West in February 1983.  After a successful duet pairing with David Frizzell for three years, West went solo.  “Jose Cuervo” is from the album, "West by West" and was a number one hit.

IN THE NEWS: The El Nino phenomenon disrupted global weather patterns, and more than 125-million viewers tune into the last episode of M.A.S.H.

Willie Nelson – “Always on my Mind” -- 1982

 

 

“Always on my Mind” is written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher and Mack James and recorded by Willie Nelson.  The song raced to number one on Billboard Magazine’s Hot Country Singles chart in May of 1982.  In February of 1983, Nelson won a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.

IN THE NEWS: A Thanksgiving weekend fire set by two juveniles destroys an entire block of downtown Minneapolis including the 16 story headquarters of Northwestern National Bank, now Wells Fargo and the vacant Donaldson’s Department store.  Nobody was injured or killed.

Maybe I didn’t love you quite as often as I could have; maybe I didn’t treat you quite as good as I should have.

 


 

George Strait – “I Cross my Heart” -- 1992

 

 

“I Cross my Heart” written by Eric Kaz and recorded by George Strait.  It was released in September 1992 from the album, "Pure Country" and topped the country chart at number one.

IN THE NEWS:  Four officers are acquitted in the L.A. beating of Rodney King. Violence erupts in Los Angeles, April 29th.

 


 

Waylon Jennings – “Clyde” -- 1980

 

 

“Clyde” was written by JJ Cale, a single from the album, "Music Man" which went to number seven on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

IN THE NEWS: On May 16, 1980, Ming Sen Shiue kidnaps former missionary Mary Stauffer and her 8-year-old daughter Beth and holds them for seven weeks.  Shiue is apparently seeking revenge for a bad grade Stauffer gave him 15 years earlier at Roseville high School.  Mother and Daughter are rescued, and Shiue is later convicted.

Clyde plays electric bass, plays it with finesse and grace, set on the porch ain’t got shoes, pickin’ the bass and singin’ the blues.

 


 

Dolly Parton – “Love is Like a Butterfly” -- 1974

 

 

“Love is Like a Butterfly” is a song written and recorded by Dolly Parton.  It was released in 1974 from the album of the same name.  The song went to the top of the chart and stayed on the country chart for twelve weeks.

IN THE NEWS: Vice President Gerald Ford of Michigan is sworn-in as the 38th President after Richard Nixon resigns the Presidency.  In sports the Dolphins beat the MN Vikings 24-to-7 in Super Bowl VIII.
