Mickey Gilley – “Fool for Your Love” -- 1983

 

 

This song was written by Don Singleton and recorded by Mickey Gilley.  It was released in March 1983 from the album of the same name.  It was Gilley’s sixteenth number one country single.

In the news -- Willie Nelson’s “Always’s on my Mind” won "Song of the Year" at the Grammys.

 I’m just a fool for you, baby, I’m just a fool for your love.

 


 

George Hamilton IV – “Abilene” -- 1963

 

 

This country classic is written by Bob Gibson, Lester Brown and John D. Loudermilk.  This song peaked at number one on the country music chart for four weeks.  George Hamilton IV passed away last fall on September 17, 2014 after suffering a serious heart attack at 77 years of age.

Abilene, Abilene prettiest town I’ve ever seen, women there don’t treat you mean.

 


 

Emmylou Harris – “Two More Bottles of Wine” -- 1978

 

 

“Two More Bottles of Wine” is written by Delbert McClinton.  It was released in 1978 from the album, "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town."  The song went to the top of country singles chart.

In the news -- When this song was on the country chart, making headlines Jim Jones followers committed mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana on November 18th.

We came out West together with a common desire, the fever we had mighta set the west coast on fire.

 


 

Bobby Bare – “Marie Laveau” -- 1974

 

 

Written by Shel Silverstein and Baxter Taylor from the album "Lullabies, Legends and Lies," it became Bobby Bare’s only number one and final top ten country hit, released in April 1974.

In the news -- just before the release of “Marie Laveau” on March 18th OPEC ended the oil embargo in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War.

The most famous of the voodoo queens that ever existed, Marie Laveau down in Louisiana, there’s a lot of weird ungodly tales about Marie.

 


 

Crystal Gale – “Half the Way” -- 1979

 

 

This song was written by Ralph Murphy and Bobby Wood.  Crystal Gale released the song in September 1979 on the album, "Miss the Mississippi," and peaked at number two and stayed at that position for three weeks on the country chart.

In the news --  an overheated reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear facility in Pennsylvania threatened to melt down, which it did not.
