Kathy Mattea – “Goin’ Gone” -- 1987

 

A song written by Pat Alger, Bill Dale and Fred Koller.  This song became Kathy Mattea’s ninth number one country hit.

In the news in 1987, Terry Waite, the special envoy of the archbishop of Canterbury in Lebanon is kidnapped in Beirut and Jim Baker resigned as host of the PTL Club after a scandal involving former secretary Jessica Hahn.

 

There’s a lighthouse in the harbor giving guidance with its light, but I had no one to return to.

 


 

Ronnie Milsap – “A Woman in Love” -- 1989

 

This song was Milsap’s 53rd single.  It also became his last number one single.  It was written by Curtis Wright and Doug Millett.

In the news in 1989, after 30 years the Cold War between East and West ends following the Malta Conference and the Berlin Wall comes down, serial killer Ted Bundy is executed in Florida’s electric chair and the Episcopal Church of the United States appoints Barbara Harris as its first female bishop.

 

No matter what you do or say, she’s always got to have her way, she’ll bring you down just to cheer you up.

 


 

Roger Miller – “Engine, Engine Number 9” -- 1965

 

This song is written and recorded by Roger Miller and was released in May 1965.  The song peaked at number two on the country chart.

In the news in 1965, May 6th two F4 tornados hit Fridley, MN and 13 people die as six tornados touch down in the Twin Cities. This was the first year mandated health warnings appeared on cigarette packets and smoking becomes a no-no.

 

Engine, engine number 9 coming down the railroad line, hot much further back did she get off?

 


 

John Anderson – “Straight Tequila Night” -- 1991

 

Written by Debbie Hupp and Kent Robbins, this song shot to number one on the country chart.

In the news in 1991, the Dow Jones average reaches 3,000 for the first time and the internet is made available to unrestricted commercial use and the number of computers on the net reaches 1-million.

 

If you really want to know she comes here a lot, she just loves to hear the music and dance.

 


 

Tanya Tucker – “I’ll Come Back as Another Woman” -- 1986

 

This song was Tucker’s third single from the album ‘Girls Like Me’ reaching number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  Written by Kent Robbins and Richard E. Carpenter.

In the news in 1986, Americans celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the first time and the US bombs Libya in protest at Libyan sponsorship of terrorist organizations involved in the bomb explode in a disco in Berlin, Germany.
