Merle Haggard - "Chill Factor" -- 1988

 

 

"Chill Factor" is written and recorded by Merle Haggard and was released in March 1988 from the album of the same name.  The song was a top ten hit reaching number nine on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS -- A US Navy ship shoots down Iranian Airliner in the Persian Gulf, mistaking it for a jet fighter. 290 killed on July 3rd.

David Houston and Tammy Wynette - "My Elusive Dreams" -- 1967

 

 

"My Elusive Dreams" is written by Billy Sherrill and Curly Putman and recorded by David Houston and Tammy Wynette.  The song became a number one country hit in October 1967.

IN THE NEWS -- Thurgood Marshall sworn in as first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice in October 1967.  In Minnesota on July 19th, Stone throwing rioters upset about racism, break windows and set fires along Plymouth Avenue in North Minneapolis.

I followed you to Texas, I followed you to Utah we didn't find it there, so we moved on.

 


 

Sammy Kershaw - "Queen of my Double Wide Trailer" -- 1993

 

 

"Queen of my Double Wide Trailer" is written by Dennis Linde and recorded by Sammy Kershaw.  It was released in August 1993 from the album, "Haunted Heart."  It peaked at number seven on the Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS -- Federal agents besiege Texas Branch, Davidian religious cult after six are killed in a raid on March 1, 1993.

Well I met her out at Murphy's Restaurant, she said she was fresh from the farm.

 


 

George Jones - "The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song)" -- 1985

 

 

This song was written by Gary Gentry and recorded by George Jones from the album, 'Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes." The song focuses on a man's fascination with fast cars and beautiful women and certain similarities between the two.

IN THE NEWS -- P.L.O. terrorists hijack the "Achille Lauro," the Italian Cruise ship with 80 passengers plus crew on October 9, 1985.  American Leon Klinghoffer was killed October 8th. The Italian government is toppled by the political crisis over the hijacking on October 16th.  

I stopped off at the Quicksack for some beer and cigarettes, the old man took my money.

 


 

Donna Fargo - "You Can't Be A Beacon if Your Light Don't Shine" -- 1974

 

 

This song is written by Marty Cooper and recorded by Donna Fargo.  It was Fargo's fifth number one single on the country charts.

IN THE NEWS -- OPEC ends oil embargo begun in 1975 during the Yom Kippur War March 18th, 1974.
