Johnny Cash - "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" -- 1958

 

 

Jack Clement wrote "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," recorded by Johnny Cash.  The song hit number one on the country chart.  The song is from the album 'Sings the Songs That Made Him Famous.'

IN THE NEWS:  Andy Knutson helps sabotage his estranged wife's political campaign with the notorious "Coya, Come Home" letter, sinking Coya Knutson's campaign for a third term in Congress.  And Khrushchev becomes Premier of the Soviet Union.

Waylon Jennings - "Rose in Paradise" -- 1987

 

 

This song was written by Stewart Harris and Jim McBride and recorded by Waylon Jennings.  It was released in January of 1987 from the album, 'Hangin' Tough.'  It became Jennings' twelfth number one single.

IN THE NEWS: Joe Niekro, the knuckleball pitcher with the Twins, is ejected in the fourth inning of an 11-3 game against the Angels after umpires find an emery board in his pocket.  He is suspended for 10 games.

She was a flower for the takin', her beauty cut just like a knife.

 


 

George Jones and Tammy Wynette - "We're Gonna Hold On" -- 1973

 

 

George Jones co-wrote "We're Gonna Hold On" with Earl Montgomery.  George Jones and Tammy Wynette were a married couple at the time when they recorded this duet.  It became a number one smash hit.

IN THE NEWS:  A ceasefire is signed, ending involvement of American Guard troops in the Vietnam War on January 28th.  Richard Nixon on national TV accepts responsibility, but not blame, for Watergate.

Randy Travis - "Diggin' Up Bones" -- 1986

 

 

"Diggin' Up Bones" is written by Paul Overstreet, Al Gore and Nat Stuckey and recorded by Randy Travis.  Released in July 1986 from the album 'Storms of Life.'  It peaked at number one.

IN THE NEWS: Space shuttle Challenger explodes after launch at Cape Canaveral, Florida killing all seven on board on January 28th.  Also the US Supreme Court reaffirms abortion rights on June 11th.  

Last night I dug your picture out from our old dresser drawer, I set it on the table and I talked to it till four.

 


 

Tanya Tucker - "Strong Enough to Bend" -- 1988

 

 

Beth Nielsen Chapman and Don Schlitz wrote this song and was recorded by Tanya Tucker.  It was released in June of 1988 and became Tucker's ninth number one country hit.

IN THE NEWS: A Pan-Am 747 explodes from a terrorist bomb and crashes in Lockerbie, Scotland killing all 259 onboard and 11 on the ground December 21st.  In November the Republicans sweep 40 states in the General Election, Bush beats Dukakis.
