The Statler Brothers – “The Class of '57” -- 1972

 

 

The Class of '57 is written by Don Reid and Harold Reid and recorded by the Statler Brothers.  It was released in 1972 and reached number six on Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  In the news, Pulitzer Prize winning poet John Berryman, suffering from alcoholism, jumps to his death from the Washington Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis.  Gov. George C. Wallace of Alabama is shot by Arthur Bremer at a political rally in Laurel, MD on May 15th.

Tommy’s selling used cars, Nancy’s fixing hair, Harvey runs a grocery store and Margaret doesn’t care.

 


 

Mel Tillis – “I Got the Hoss” -- 1977

 

 

I Got the Hoss is written by Gerald House, recorded by Mel Tillis.  Released in 1977 as a single from the album, ‘Love’s Troubled Waters,’ the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  Making news in 1977, President Carter pardons Vietnam War draft evaders on January 21st and the first woman Episcopal priest ordained in the USA.

Conway Twitty – “I’d Love to Lay you Down” -- 1980

 

 

This song is written by Johnny Macrae and recorded by Conway Twitty.  It was released in January 1980 from the album, ‘Heart and Soul.’  It was Twitty’s 24th number one country hit.  In the news Iraqi troops hold 90 square miles of Iran after invasion.  Eight year Iran-Iraq War begins on September 19th, three US nuns and lay workers are found shot in El Salvador in December 4th.

David Frizzell and Shelly West – “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma” -- 1980

 

 

You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma is a 1981 single from the film Any Which Way You Can, performed by David Frizzell and Shelly West.  The song would become Shelly West’s debut on the country chart and Frizzell’s second hit on the country chart.  The song shot to number one on the country chart.  In the news, a rapid accumulation of more than 10 inches of snow causes the roof of the Metrodome to collapse; requiring it to be re-inflated just 48 days after it was inflated for the first time.  Pope John Paul II wounded in St. Peter’s Square by a gunman on May 13th.

Tammy Wynette – “Stand by Your Man” 1968

 

 

This song is co-written by Tammy Wynette and Billy Sherrill.  It proved to be the most successful record of Wynette’s career.  The song peaked at number one in late 1968 and stayed at number one for three weeks.  In the news, Martin Luther King Jr. civil rights leader is slain in Memphis, TN on April 4th.  Senator Robert F. Kennedy is shot and critically wounded in Los Angeles hotel after winning California primary June 5th, died on June 6th.
