Buck Owens – “Made in Japan” -- 1972

 

 

Bob and Faye Morris wrote “Made in Japan” and was recorded by Buck Owens.  The song peaked at number one in 1972 and was on the country chart for thirteen weeks.  It was Owens' last number one as a solo artist.

IN THE NEWS: Five men are apprehended by police in the attempt to bug democratic national committee headquarters in Washington D.C.  It was the start of the Watergate scandal, June 17, 1972.

Dolly Parton – “Sweet Summer Lovin’” -- 1979

 

 

This song is written by Bud Reneau and Blaise Tosti and recorded by Dolly Parton.  It was released in September 1979 from the album, “Great Balls of Fire.”  “Sweet Summer Lovin’” reached number seven on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS: The Shah leaves Iran after a year of turmoil. Muslim leader Ayatollah Khomeini takes over and Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister of England.

Charley Pride – “Mountain of Love” -- 1982

 

 

Harold Dorman wrote “Mountain of Love”, in December 1981, Charley Pride released a cover version which topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in March of 1982.  It was Pride’s twenty-sixth number one country hit.

IN THE NEWS: John W. Hinckley Jr. is found "not guilty because of insanity" in the shooting of President Reagan. Also, Virginia Piper, wife of a retired investment banker, is kidnapped from her Orono, Minnesota home.  The one-million dollar ransom is paid and Piper is found in Jay Cooke State Park.

Standing on a mountain looking down on a city, the way I feel is a dog-gone pity.

 


 

Jeanne Pruett – “Satin Sheets” -- 1973

 

 

“Satin Sheets” is written by John Volinkaty and recorded by Jeanne Pruett.  It was released as a single from the album of the same name.  “Satin Sheets” was Pruett’s only number one hit.

IN THE NEWS: Making news in 1973 US Supreme Court rules on Roe Verses Wade.  Here in Minnesota, Excelsior Amusement Park closes and is demolished.

Satin sheets to lie on, satin pillows to cry on, still I’m not happy don’t you see.

 


 

John Anderson – “1959” -- 1980

 

 

“1959” is a song written by Gary Gentry and recorded by John Anderson.  It was released in 1980 from the album ‘John Anderson.’  The song reached number seven on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS: Ronald Reagan is elected President in a Republican sweep.

Cigarettes were a quarter then, Bobby-socks and jeans were in, Elvis sang the songs that we loved so.
