Loretta Lynn – “Out of My Head and Back in My Bed” -- 1977

 

 

A single written by Peggy Forman, it became Loretta Lynn’s twelfth -- and last  -- number one on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1977:

  • Lasers are first used to initiate a fusion reaction.

George Jones – “Her Name Is” -- 1976

 

 

Written by Bobby Braddock, the song scored a number three position on the country chart.

  • America celebrates its Bicentennial on July 4th
  • The US Navy tests the Tomahawk cruise missile

The Judds – “Grandpa Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days” -- 1986

 

 

Jamie O’Hara wrote this song; it became The Judds' sixth number one on the Billboard Country Chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1986:

  • Space Shuttle Challenger explodes after launch at Cape Canaveral, Florida killing all seven aboard on January 28th
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee approves William H. Rehnquist as Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court

Sammy Kershaw – “Third Rate Romance” -- 1994

 

 

Russell Smith wrote this song and was covered by Sammy Kershaw in 1994.  It peaked at number two on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1994:

  • The US sends forces to Persian Gulf
  • Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is attacked on January 6th

 

Sittin’ in at a tiny table in a ritzy restaurant, she was starin’ at her coffee cup.

 


 

Johnny Cash – “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” -- 1970

 

 

Kris Kristofferson wrote the song.  Ray Stevens first recorded the song then Kristofferson released his version.  It was Johnny Cash’s version that made it number one.

IN THE NEWS IN 1970:

  • Egyptian President Nasser dies and is replaced by Anwar El-Sadat
