Ronnie Milsap – “Smokey Mountain Rain” -- 1980

 

 

Ronnie Milsap scored another number one hit in 1980 with the ballad, “Smokey Mountain Rain.”  The song was written by Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan.

IN THE NEWS IN 1980:

  • The US defeats the Soviet Union in Hockey, it becomes known as the “Miracle on Ice” at the Winter Olympics.
  • John Wayne Gracy Jr. sentenced to death for the murder of 33 boys and men.

Johnny Carver – “Afternoon Delight” -- 1976

 

 

Johnny Carver covered a Starland Vocal Band pop hit for country music and had a top ten success on the country chart reaching number nine.

IN THE NEWS IN 1976:

  • The great USA celebrates its bicentennial on July 4th.
  • Viking I lands on Mars.
  • The Apple Computer Company is formed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

Barbara Fairchild – “Kid Stuff” -- 1973

 

 

“Kid Stuff” is a country single from the album of the same name.  It became a top ten hit reaching number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.  It’s written by Jerry Crutchfield and Don Earl.

IN THE NEWS IN 1973:

  • US Supreme Court rules on Roe Vs. Wade making abortion a US Constitutional right.
  • Yom Kippur War, the fourth largest Arab-Israeli conflict Egyptian and Syrian forces attack Israel.
  • Skylab, the US first space station, is launched.

Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson – “Reasons to Quit” -- 1983

 

 

A duet by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson from the album "Pancho and Lefty." Written by Merle Haggard, it topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart at number six.

IN THE NEWS IN 1983:

  • The United States invades Grenada.
  • A 5.2 earthquake hits Central New York.
  • Vanessa Williams becomes the first African-American Miss America.

Tom T. Hall – “I Like Beer” -- 1975

 

 

Tom T. Hall wrote and recorded “I like Beer” from the album, ‘I Wrote a Song About You.’

  • The first-ever strike by Doctors in the United States takes place.
