Merle Haggard and Clint Eastwood – “Bar Room Buddies” - 1980

 

“Bar Room Buddies” is written by Milton Brown, Cliff Crofford, Steve Dorf and Snuff Garrett and featured on the soundtrack from the film “Bronco Billy” starring Clint Eastwood.  The single topped the Billboard Country Chart at number one.

Waylon Jennings – “Wrong” - 1990

 

“Wrong” was the last top ten hit of Waylon Jennings career peaking at number five.  “Wrong” was written by Steve Seskin and Andre Pessis.

IN THE NEWS IN 1990:

  • General Manuel Noriega surrenders in Panama on January 3rd.
  • East and West Germany reunite on August 31st,
  • The ‘Simpsons’ debuts on Fox and becomes an instant hit.

It was a picture perfect wedding, we had the whole world at our feet, everyone thought we were heading down a lovers easy street.

 


 

Barbara Mandrell – “If Loving You is Wrong I Don’t Want to be Right” - 1979

 

This song was written by Homer Banks, Ray Jackson and Carl Hampton.  This song scored a number one on the country chart in February of 1979.

IN THE NEWS IN 1979:

  • An overheated reactor at the Three Mile Island Nuclear facility in Pennsylvania threatens to melt down, but does not.
  • The ESPN Sports programming television network is launched on cable TV.
  • American Airlines Flight 191 crashes in a field near O’Hare International airport in Chicago.

Ray Price – “For the Good Times” - 1970

 

“For the Good Times” is penned by Kris Kristofferson.  In 1970, Ray Price recorded a version of the song.  It became his fifth number one single for Ray Price.

IN THE NEWS IN 1970:

  • Minnesota Vikings lost to Kansas City Chiefs 23 to 7 in Super Bowl IV.
  • Earthquake kills more than 50,000 in Peru on May 31st.
  • The Food and Drug Administration warns that birth control pills may cause blood clots.
  • The first Earth Day was held on April 22nd.

Susan Raye – “L.A. International Airport” - 1971

 

“L.A. International Airport” is written by Leanne Scott.  Susan Raye recorded her version of the song in 1971 which became a huge hit.  It reached number nine on the Billboard Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1971:

  • The Monticello Nuclear Power Plant’s tank of radioactive cooling water overflows reaching the Mississippi River.
  • End of the "gold standard" for Americans currency, gold payments ended in an attempt to halt the increasing inflation America was seeing.
  • The first floppy disc is created for computers.
