Merle Haggard – “Big City” -- 1982

 

 

“Big City” is co-written by Merle Haggard and Dean Holloway. The song was released in January 1982 from the album of the same name.  In April that year,  the song peaked at number one, becoming Haggard’s 27th number one hit.

IN THE NEWS -- Making news in 1982, a permanent artificial heart is implanted in a human for the first time -- Dr. Barney Clark at 61-years-old.

Alan Jackson – “Gone Country” -- 1994

 

 

This song is written by Bob McDill and recorded by Alan Jackson.  Released in November 1994 from the album ‘Who I Am,’ the song went to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS --  In 1994, the US sends forces to the Persian Gulf in October.  Bill Clinton is accused of sexual harassment while Governor of Arkansas in May.

She’s been playing in a room on a strip for ten years in Vegas.

 


 

Sonny James – “When the Snow is on the Roses” -- 1972

 

 

Ernst Bader, Larry Kusik and Eddie Snyder wrote “When the Snow is on the Roses.”  The southern gentleman Sonny James scored his 22nd number one hit on the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles Chart in Mid September 1972.

IN THE NEWS -- Gov. George C.Wallace of Alabama is shot by Arthur Bremers at Laurel, MD political rally in May. Also the compact disc is developed by RCA.

The Kendalls – “Thank God for the Radio” -- 1984

 

 

“Thank God for the Radio,” was The Kendalls' third and last number one country hit.  Max D. Barnes and Robert Jones wrote this country hit.

IN THE NEWS --  Democratic National Convention nominated Minnesota’s Walter F. Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro.  President Reagan is re-elected in a landslide with 59% of the vote.

Tanya Tucker – “Lizzie and the Rain Man” -- 1975

 

 

“Lizzie and the Rain Man” is written by Kenny O’ Dell and Larry Henley which became a number one country hit for Tanya Tucker in 1975.

IN THE NEWS -- Making headlines in 1975 the city of Saigon is surrendered and remaining Americans are evacuated ending the Vietnam War April 30th.

He came ridin’ in on the sunrise of a hot west Texas day.
