Don Gibson - "Sea of Heartbreak" - 1961

 

 

 

Sea of Heartbreak is a song written by Paul Hampton and Hal David and recorded by Don Gibson.  This song describes the feelings of lost love and compares the to being lost in a metaphorical sea of intensely sad emotion.  The song topped out at number two on the Country Chart.

Skeeter Davis - "Set Him Free" - 1959

 

 

 

Set Him Free is a song written by Skeeter Davis, Helen Moyer and Marie Wilson.  The song peaked at number five on the Country Chart.  In 1959, Set Him Free became the first song by a female country artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award.

NEWS & EVENTS OF 1959:

  • Rumors of cheating on TV quiz shows erupt into a national scandal
  • The Boeing 707 jet airliner comes into service
  • The cost of a gallon of gas was 25 cents.

Johnny Lee - "Country Party" - 1977

 

 

 

Rick Nelson wrote Country Party which was recorded by Johnny Lee and released in May of 1977.  The song is a slight rewrite of Rick Nelson's song Garden Party and it reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

NEWS & EVENTS OF 1977:

  • Star Wars hits theaters for the first time.
  • The Neutron bomb is developed
  • Lasers are first used to initiate a fusion reaction.

David Frizzell and Shelly West - "A Texas State of Mind" - 1981

 

 

A Texas State of Mind is a song written by Cliff Crofford, John Durrill and Snuff Garrett and recorded by David Frizzell and Shelly West as a duet.  The song reached number nine on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in 1981.

NEWS & EVENTS IN 1981:

  • Aids is first identified
  • The Supreme Court rules to allow television cameras in the court room
  • Pacman mania sweeps the country.

Jim Reeves - "Distant Drums" - 1966

 

 

 

Distant Drums is written by Cindy Walker and the song was released in March of 1966, two years after Jim Reeves death in a plane crash on July 31, 1964. The song peaked at number one April of 1966 and stayed at that position for four weeks.

NEWS & EVENTS OF 1966:

  • Medicare begins July 1st
  • Lyndon Johnson asks for $1 billion in aid to the country
  • A gallon of gas was 32 cents
  • The average cost for a new car was $2,650.00.
