Conway Twitty – “Saturday Night Special” -- 1988

 

 

Larry Bastian and Dewayne Blackwell wrote “Saturday Night Special” and was recorded by Conway Twitty and was released in June of 1988.  It was a top ten hit reaching Number Nine.

IN THE NEWS IN 1988:

  • A US Navy ship shoots down Iranian airliner in the Persian Gulf mistaking it for a jet fighter, killing 290 people.

Johnny Paycheck – “Old Violin” -- 1986

 

 

Johnny Paycheck wrote and recorded this moving and very sad country song.  The song topped-out at Number 21 on the country chart in June of 1986.

IN THE NEWS IN 1986:

  • Space shuttle Challenger explodes after launch at Cape Canaveral, Florida killing all seven aboard on January 28th.
  • On April 26th, a major nuclear accident rocks the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl Power Station.
  • Barry Diller, head of News Corp creates Fox, the fourth television network.

David Frizzell and Shelly West – “I Just Came Here to Dance” -- 1982

 

 

“I Just Came Here to Dance” is written by Ken Bell, Terry Skinner and J.L. Wallace and recorded by David Frizzell and Shelly West as a duet.  The song reached Number Four on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1982:

  • On April 6th a blizzard -- unprecedented in size for April -- dumps 1 to 2 feet of snow on the northeastern U.S.
  • On March 10th, all nine planets align on the same side of the sun.
  • Braniff International Airways declares bankruptcy and ceases all flights.

Donna Fargo – “You Can’t be a Beacon if Your Light Don’t Shine” -- 1974

 

 

Marty Cooper wrote this song and was recorded by Donna Fargo.  This song topped out at Number One, Fargo’s fourth number one on the Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1974:

  • The Sears’ Tower in Chicago becomes the world’s tallest building.
  • President Ford announces an amnesty program for Vietnam War deserters and draft evaders.
  • A smallpox epidemic in India causes the deaths of between 10,000 to 20,000 people.

Trisha Yearwood – “XXX’S and OOO’s (An American Girl)” -- 1994

 

 

Matraca Berg and Alice Randall wrote “XXX’s and OOO’s,” and was recorded by Trisha Yearwood.  The song became Yearwood’s second Number One country hit.

IN THE NEWS IN 1994:

  • Major League Baseball players strike on August 13th.
  • Bill Clinton is accused of sexual harassment while Governor of Arkansas on May 6th.
  • Newt Gingrich is named House Speaker on December 5th.
