Waylon Jennings – “Wrong” - 1990

 

 

Wrong is written by Steve Sesken and Andre Pessis. The song was released in May of 1990 and topped the country chart at number five. It was the last top ten hit of Waylon’s career.  In the news in 1990, South Africa freed Nelson Mandela, who had been imprisoned for 27 and a half years on February 11th. Republicans suffered a setback in midterm elections on November 8th and the Hubble Telescope launched into space.

George Hamilton IV – “Abilene” - 1963

 

 

Abilene is written by Bob Gibson, Lester Brown and John D. Loudermilk. George Hamilton IV recorded the song, which reached #1 on the country chart and stayed there for four weeks in 1963. In the news in 1963, Pope John XXIII passed away on June 3rd and is succeeded by Cardinal Montini on June 21st, who becomes Paul VI. President Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas and Martin Luther King, Jr. announced to the Marchers on Washington D.C. during his famous “I Have a Dream” speech that 1963 is not an end, but a beginning.

Johnny Duncan and Janie Fricke – “Stranger” - 1976

 

 

Kris Kristofferson wrote Stranger and was recorded as a duet by Johnny Duncan and Janie Fricke. The song reached number ten on the country chart in 1976. In the news in 1976, Ted Turner purchased the Atlanta Braves for a reported $12 million dollars.  George H.W. Bush became the director of the C.I.A. until 1977 and the nation celebrated its bicentennial on July 4th.

Crystal Gayle – “Too Many Lovers” - 1981

 

 

Too Many Lovers was written by Sam Hogin, Ted Lindsay and Mark True and recorded by Crystal Gayle. The song was Crystal Gayle’s ninth #1 on the country chart.  In the news in 1981, Israel annexed the disputed Golan Heights territory.  The average income in 1981 in the U.S. was $21,050.00 and the first American test tube baby was born.

Alan Jackson – “Someday” - 1991

 

 

Singer/songwriter Alan Jackson and Jim McBride wrote Someday and Alan recorded it. The song was released in August of 1991, peaking at #1 on the country chart. In the news in 1991, cease fire ended the Persian Gulf War, Jeffery Dahmer was arrested on July 22nd after the remains of 11 men and boys weew found in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin apartment and the average income per year was $20,430.00 with the average monthly rent being about $495.00.
