Alan Jackson – “Little Man” -- 1999

 

 

Alan Jackson wrote this song about failed small businesses -- "the little man" --  that struggled to compete against big businesses and corporations.  The song went to number three on the Billboard Hot Country Chart.  Jackson will appear at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand August 30th.

Making news in July of 1999 -- John F. Kennedy Jr., wife Carolyn and her sister, Lauren Beesette, are lost at sea when a plane JFK Jr is piloting disappears near Martha’s Vineyard off Massachusetts, July 16th.

Waylon Jennings - "Luckenbach, Texas" -- 1977

 

 

Written by Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons, "Luckenbach, Texas" was recorded by Waylon Jennings and released in April 1977. In the song, Jennings talks about a strained marriage and how things will be better if the couple just gets back "to the basics of love" and move to Luckenbach, Texas.

In the news in April 1977 -- Jimmy Carter begins his presidency, Annie Hall is in the movie houses and Alex Haley wins a Pulitzer for his book, "Roots."

Tracy Lawrence – “Sticks and Stones” -- 1991

 

 

Written by Elbert West and Roger Dillion, this song was released in November 1991 from Tracy Lawrence’s debut album, "Sticks and Stones.'  In January 1992, it became Lawrence’s first number one hit.

Making news in 1991 -- Professor Anita Hill accuses Judge Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in October.  The senate confirms Thomas for the Supreme Court on October 15th.

Barbara Mandrell – “Crackers” -- 1980

 

 

Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan wrote “Crackers.”  Barbara Mandrell recorded the song which was released in June on the album "Love is Fair."  “Crackers” peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart.

Making news in June -- the U.S. Supreme Court upholds limits on federal aid for abortions.

Charly McClain and Mickey Gilley – “Paradise Tonight” -- 1983

 

 

“Paradise Tonight” is a song written by Bill Kenner and Mark Wright.  It was recorded by Charly McClain and Mickey Gilley as a duet.  It was released in June of 1983 on the album, ‘Paradise.’  The single went to number one and stayed on the Country Chart for 13 weeks.

About the time the release of this song, the big story in the news -- Sally Ride becomes the first U.S. Woman astronaut in space as a crew member aboard the space shuttle challenger, June 18th.
