Eddie Rabbitt - "Step by Step" -- 1981

 

 

"Step by Step" was co-written by Eddie Rabbitt, David Malloy and Even Stevens.  The song was released in July of 1981 from the album of the same name.  This song peaked at number one.

MAKING NEWS IN 1981:

  • Ronald Reagan nominates Judge Sandra Day O'Connor, 51, of Arizona as the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court on July 7th.
  • Air traffic controller’s strike begins August 3rd disrupting flights; the government dismisses strikers on August 11th.
  • Also in August MTV starts broadcasting.

Barbara Mandrell - "Married But Not to Each Other" -- 1977

 

 

This top ten hit recorded by Barbara Mandrell is written by Frances Miller and Denise Craig.  The song peaked at number three on the country chart in April of 1977.

IN THE NEWS IN 1977:

  • Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin visits the U.S. President and Mrs. Carter play host.  The trip eventually led to the Camp David Peace Talks.
  • Pump your own gas begins at the gas pumps.

Johnny Horton - "When It's Springtime in Alaska" -- 1959

 

 

"When It's Springtime in Alaska" was a 1959 single by Johnny Horton.  The single was Horton's sixth release on the country chart and the first of three number ones on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1959:

  • St. Paul's MN Rondo neighborhood considered the heart of the black community is demolished to make way for interstate 94.
  • The St. Lawrence Seaway opens, allowing ocean ships to reach the Midwest on April 25, 1959.

Bellamy Brothers - "Let Your Love Flow" -- 1976

 

 

"Let Your Love Flow" written by Larry Williams and made popular by country music duo The Bellamy Brothers.  The song was released in March of 1976 and peaked at number 21 on the country chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1976:

  • A 7.5 earthquake kills 22,778 in Guatemala and Honduras.
  • Sara Jane Moore sentenced to life for attempting to shoot President Ford.

Waylon Jennings - "Amanda" -- 1979

 

 

"Amanda" is written by Bob McDill and recorded by Waylon Jennings and was released in April 1979.  It became one of the biggest country hits of 1979.

IN THE NEWS IN 1979:

  • President Jimmy Carter proposes Martin Luther King's birthday be a holiday.
  • An overheated reactor at the Three Mile Island Nuclear facility in Pennsylvania threatens to melt down, but it does not.
