Merle Haggard – “The Fightin’ Side of Me” -- 1970

 

 

“The Fightin’ Side of Me” is written and performed by Merle Haggard. The song was released in January of 1970.  The Hagg will perform at the Grandstand at the Minnesota State Fair on Labor Day September 7th  and tickets are still available.

Highway 101 – “Cry, Cry, Cry” -- 1988

 

 

“Cry, Cry, Cry” is written by John Scott Sherrill and Don Devaney and performed by country music group Highway 101.  The single went to number one on the Country Chart, released in January 1988.

 

IN THE NEWS IN 1988:

  • Pan Am Flight 103 explodes over Lockerbie, Scotland killing all 259 aboard and 11 on the ground December 21st. Libyan terrorists are suspected.
  • Prozac is introduced as an anti-depressant.
  • And preacher Jimmy Swaggart admits to being with prostitutes.

Alan Jackson – “I Don’t Even Know Your Name” -- 1995

 

 

This song was co-written by Alan Jackson along with Ron Jackson and Andy Lofton.  Recorded by Alan Jackson and released in May 1995, it became a number one hit for Alan Jackson.  Alan Jackson will appear at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand August 30th.

 

IN THE NEWS IN 1995:

  • Israelis and Palestinians agree on transferring the West Bank to the Arabs on September 24th.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin slain by Jewish extremist at a Peace Rally November 4th
  • And in the US the Million Man March draws hundreds-of-thousands of black men to the US capital October 16th.

George Jones – “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” -- 1985

 

 

“Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” is written by Troy Seals and Max D. Barnes.  It was recorded by George Jones reaching number three on the Hot Country Singles Chart.

IN THE NEWS IN 1985:

  • Rock Hudson dies of AIDS at age 59.
  • British Scientist report the opening of an enormous hole in the Earth’s ozone layer over Antarctica.
  • Soviet Leader Konstantin Chernenko dies at age 73 and is replaced by Mikhail Gorbachev.

Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn – “I Still Believe In Waltzes” -- 1981

 

 

This song is written by Michael Hughes, Bob Dennis and Johnny Macrae.  Recorded as a duet by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, the song went to number two on the country chart.

 

IN THE NEWS IN 1981:

  • Buckingham Palace announces the engagement of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer in February.
  • MTV starts broadcasting.
  • And Sandra Day O’Connor takes her seat as the first female Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court.
