Waylon Jennings - "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" -- 1968

 

 

Jimmy Bryant wrote "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" and was recorded by Waylon Jennings.  The song spent 18 weeks on the Hot Country Singles Chart peaking at number two.

IN THE NEWS IN 1968:  Mayor Richard Daley opens the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.  The convention moves toward nominating Hubert Humphrey from Minnesota for President.  Violence erupts in the streets outside the convention in August.  September 1st Democratic nominee Hubert Humphrey kicks off his Presidential Campaign at New York City's Labor Day Parade.

Conway Twitty - "Hello Darlin'" -- 1970

 

 

"Hello Darlin'" was written and recorded by Conway Twitty.  Released in March 1970, the song spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart that summer.

IN THE NEWS IN 1970: The first Earth Day is held April 22nd and the World Trade Center is completed.  California is the first No-Fault divorce state and the floppy disc is invented.

Merle Haggard - "Workin' Man Blues" -- 1969

 

 

"Workin' Man Blues" is a song written and performed by Merle Haggard.  The song reached number one on the country chart.  Remember, the Hagg will be performing at the Minnesota State Fair at the Grandstand Labor Day, September 7th, 2015 -- get your tickets.

IN THE NEWS IN 1969:  Stonewall riot in New York City marks the beginning of the Gay Rights movement June 28th.  Women's equality becomes a major political issue and Sirahan Sirahan convicted in the murder of Robert Kennedy.

George Strait - "I Cross my Heart" -- 1992

 

 

"I Cross my Heart" is written by Steve Dorf and Eric Kaz and performed by George Strait.  It was released in September 1992 and topped the Country Chart at number one.

IN THE NEWS IN 1992

  • Hal Greenwood Jr. -- chairman of the failed Midwest Federal Savings and Loan Association in Minnesota -- is sentenced to 46 months in prison and ordered to forfeit $3.6 Million for racketeering involving the institution's collapse.
  • The U.S. Supreme Court reaffirms Right to Abortion June 29th.
  • Republicans renominate Bush and Quayle.

Patty Loveless - "Chains" -- 1990

 

 

"Chains" is a song written by Hal Bynum and Bud Reneau and recorded by Patty Loveless.  Released in December of 1989, the song topped the chart at number one.

IN THE NEWS IN 1990:

  • U.S. Supreme Court upsets law banning flag burning June 11th.
  • US Appeals Court overturns Oliver North's Iran Contra conviction.
  • 99% of US households have at least one radio with the average owning five.
