On March 22nd, 2017, my life changed forever. A skinny, sad dog was brought in to the Tri-County Humane Society by his previous owner's neighbor. The owner had Alzheimer's and dementia and had forgotten they had pets. Our radio station works a lot with the TCHS and before the little guy was even put up for adoption, he was brought into the radio studio.

I saw the little mutt and fell right in love. I had a deposit on him before he even left my arms. My world has revolved around Norman for the past year and I wouldn't have it any other way. Here are 10 things I have learned over the past year from adopting a dog.

1. You don't always need the "latest and greatest" stuff. Sometimes and old sock is all you need for hours of fun.

2. Car rides are the best mood-booster. Windows down of course!

3. Eat the treat. You can't always get one for yourself, so take them when offered.

4. Walks > Gym. A leisurely walk on a summer evening is far better for the soul than a gym treadmill.

5. Sunday's are a day to reset. Everyone needs a day off. Sometimes that means multiple naps and hanging out on the couch.

6. Rolling in the grass is worth the stains.

7. Just because a ball is thrown, doesn't mean you have to bring it back. If it isn't something you want to do, or it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

8. Be friendly to everyone you see. Offer a smile (tag wag) to everyone. It might be exactly what they needed.

9. Get off the beaten path. The best adventures happen when you leave your normal route.

10. Forgiveness and patience. No matter how many phone chargers and internet cables Norman eats, they can always be replaced, and I will forgive him. He has also gotten better about not eating them in previous months.

Bonus: Adopted dogs are the best. I had no idea what I was getting when I adopted Norman and he ended up being the best dog ever. Save a life, adopt don't shop, and support your local shelter!
